NEWS RELEASE - please copy and redistribute! June 20, 2000 Profane Existence Magazine is Back from the Dead! Like a bolt of lightning from the clear blue sky, inspiration has struck to restart publishing Profane Existence Magazine. Profane Existence is an international anarcho-punk resource magazine, started in 1989 and published which was once believed to have the "final issue" in December 1998. The "end" of the magazine was brought about in 1998 after the former Profane Existence Collective was beset by huge financial and personnel setbacks from which the remaining members could did not believe they could recover from. Now more than a year a half later, several former collective members (including collective founder Dan Siskind) have formed a plan to bring back this invaluable resource magazine for the politically active and anarcho-punk movement. CHANGES: Time for reflection over "what went wrong" has lead us to some important changes in the magazine: FREE DISTRIBUTION: The magazine will be free of charge in stores and small distros all over the world. Distribution of will be handled by Blackened Distribution (run by two ex-members of the PE collective) which will ensure it receives the worldwide reach it formerly enjoyed. Prepaid bundle prices will be posted (cost of postage only) and cost of shipping bundles to "third world" and war torn areas, as well as free copies to individual prisoners, will be figured into the over all budget of the magazine. This is an effort to not repeat the years of people hours spent by Profane Existence trying to collect small debts for zines, much of which was still unpaid well after the collective ceased operations. It also means the cost of distribution will be shared by the local scenes with donations to those who distribute locally strongly encouraged. Subscriptions will not be sold, but people will be able to pre-order the next available issue by sending the appropriate amount of funds to cover postage. INTERNET EDITION: With the proliferation of the internet, we plan to also publish simultaneous internet versions of Profane Existence #38. This will consist of both and .HTML "web edition" as well as a .PDF download of the printed magazine. Both internet editions will contain all of the content of the printed magazine, including the ads (to help cover the cost of the printed magazine). The internet editions will be published on the website of the former collective at www.profaneexistence.com and will be accessible free of charge. FUNDING: Primary funding will come from ad sales (see rates below). The cost of printing and shipping will be directly related to the over all size of the magazine, but there are some costs which remain a constant (bulk rate permit for example). If a large number of ads are received, the number of pages can be increased as well as the number of copies printed. We estimate that a 40 page magazine will cost around $2000 to produce and distribute 10,000 copies, but hope to increase the size and number printed if funds permit . To cover this cost we have calculated that the new Profane Existence will have the most expensive ad rates of the DIY movement, but a small sampling of former advertiser have unanimously stated they would be willing to pay more to see the return of Profane Existence Magazine. CONTENT: The content of Profane Existence Magazine will remain virtually unchanged from the former magazine: News of protest and resistance from around the world, interviews with bands and activists within the punk and radical movement, letters, music and print reviews, and relevant articles. Likely to also make a comeback is the columns sections, depending on availability and schedule of former columnists and new recruits. Already lined up for the next issue is a lengthy interview with the band Aus-Rotten, whose recent show in Minneapolis helped contribute inspirationally to the decision to bring back the magazine. STAFF: At this point the editorial and writing staff consists of those former PE editors who remain in Minneapolis and hopefully from some who have also since moved away. Right now help relaunching the zine has been pledged by Dan, Joe, and Kerry of the former collective, plus the prolific Felix Von Havoc. We expect to receive more assistance as news of the relaunch spreads and we are able to contact more former collective members with the news. As is customary, all labor involved with the publishing of Profane Existence Magazine is contributed on a voluntary, non-compensated basis. WHEN: We are not alone in the feeling that every day without Profane Existence is another day of missed opportunities, building disillusionment and a loss to the movement. We are therefore rushing issue #38 into publication at an extremely accelerated pace. The deadline for ads and printed contributions has been set to Monday, July 3, with the publication going to press on July 10th, and shipping will begin on July 17. Specifics as to distribution will be worked out over the next couple of weeks. REVIEW POLICY: Because of the very short length of time to prepare the next issue, we are not requesting people send review material at this time, simply because we will not likely be able to find reviewers to handle it before publishing time. All review stuff received will be held over for issue #39, but as always, we will not guarantee that we can review every item sent to us. However, we are all still very active in the movement and will pull recent material from our own collections to make up the review sections for the long overdue PE #38. There are many more details yet to be worked out as Profane
Existence #38 is hastily rushed towards publication. We are seeking
contributions of words, labor and even money to get this thing
rolling again as quickly as possible. If you can help in any
way, please let us know. For the time being, please contact us
c/o Blackened Distribution (we're usually in the office around
10 am 4:30pm CST, but can be reached via email at any time). Dan and Joe ex-ex-Profane Existence
